Hello and welcome back!!

This is the second edition of our newsletter, in this months edition we will cover:

The Old Bake House, Devon Open Studios, A New Style of Painting and A quick note on August….

The Old Bake House

An artist studio is always more than just a studio to the artist, its an accumulation of ideas and stories. In this case, Charlie has been fortunate enough to take a studio in the top floor of the Old Bake House. The building comes with its own history that will feature in the next newsletter together with some early exploratory work. This raw space provides her with both an environment to experiment in and paintings to be found within the views of Dart valley and the ingrained narratives in the worn-down floorboards.

The bottom floor of the Old Bake House is also home to the Almond Thief. Opening on Tuesdays and Fridays, the Old Bake House still supplies Totnes with delicious baked goods! So not only will Charlie get to enjoy the smell, she will also hear snippets of conversations that often influence her work. An example of this is Chattering Thoughts a piece that reflects missing words and phrases, the enigma of a stolen sentence. It’s currently hanging out at A Pickled Thought.

Devon Open Studios

Devon Open Studios is a staple of the year! It provides an opportunity for artists to showcase their work independently. Allowing them to engage with their audiences on a one to one basis.

Unfortunately, we cannot take part in open studios this year as we opened our doors a little too late. However, Mum and I have taken part in a few Open Studios in previous years. We found that we enjoyed being able to talk with people about our artistic practices, to share the stories of our Art and to find out more about where it will be living.

This year will be slightly different  given the whole COVID thing with some of the exhibitions taking place online or with limited numbers allowed into the studios. For more details: Click Here.

A New Style of Painting

Charlie has been experimenting with a new style of painting this month. The two pieces she has created are for submission to the Sunday Times Water Colour Exhibition.

Between These Walls, is an exploration of the home. It has become a comfort, and yet also a trap throughout the pandemic. The soft furnishings with warm colours contrasted by cool-toned walls creates a sense of the balance most of us have had to form in our homes as our place of rest transforms into a place of work. This work also reflects Charlie's roots in illustration and graphics leaning more into the realistic. Urban Escape, on the other hand, reflects an urbanised landscape again inspired by the consequences of Covid-19 and the notion of a staycation. It still retains Charlie distinct style but is responding to a different concept.

A Quick Note on August

Our Quick note is thank you!!

We want to say a big to thank you for all of your support during August, usually the busy month in Devon, this year it has been a bit of a strange one! However meeting and talking to all of you has been a privilege, even if we can only meet half your faces, we have loved hearing your words.

So once again thank you!
